How to play Minesweeper

Minesweeper is one of the most classic logic-deduction games ever made. The field is a grid of tiles, with a number of mines hidden at random. Your single goal: reveal every tile that isn't a mine — without ever clicking one.

When you reveal a safe tile, a number (1–8) appears showing how many mines sit in the 8 tiles around it. If a tile is blank, none of its neighbours are mines, so the game opens up the whole connected area for you. The entire game is about deducing where the mines are from those numbers.

Controls

  • Reveal a tile: click it (tap on mobile).
  • Flag a mine: right-click on desktop; long-press on mobile; or turn on Flag mode above and every tap places a flag.
  • Chord (fast open): once a number has the right count of flags around it, click that number again to open all the remaining neighbours at once — the key trick for speed.
  • Switch field size with Easy / Hard. Your first click is always safe — you can never lose on move one.

From beginner to expert

  1. Start from the 1s. If a "1" has just one unknown neighbour left, that tile must be the mine — flag it.
  2. Use "satisfied" numbers. When a number already has all its mines flagged, every other neighbour is safe to open.
  3. Learn the patterns. The edge "1-2-1" and "1-2-2-1" have fixed solutions: in 1-2-1 the tiles outside the two 1s are mines and the tile below the 2 is safe. Recognise the shape and you skip the reasoning.
  4. When stuck, play the odds. At a dead end, compare the probability of "mine here" across spots and take the lowest — preferring corners and edges that reveal the most new information.

That is the charm of Minesweeper: it looks like luck, but the vast majority of moves can be proven by pure logic. Luck only truly enters at a few rare endgame forks. For the probability and computational complexity behind it, read "The Logic and Probability of Minesweeper".

About this game

This is an original Minesweeper by Day & Night Studio: safe first click, auto-flood of blank areas, flagging via right-click / long-press / chording, and your best time saved per difficulty. It's free, no download, phone and desktop. Clear a field whenever you like.

FAQ

Can I lose on the very first click?

No. We guarantee your first click and the ring around it are mine-free, so the game always opens a safe area to start.

How do I flag on mobile?

Long-press a tile to flag / unflag, or turn on Flag mode so every tap places a flag.

What is "chording"?

When a number has the matching number of flags beside it, click that number again to open all remaining neighbours at once — if your flags are right. Wrong flags will blow up.

Is my record saved?

Yes — your best clear time for each difficulty is stored locally in your browser.
